Bioindustry Park is a science and technology park focused on the Life Sciences and Human Health sector, based in the Turin Metropolitan City area. It has been operating since 1998 under a public-private management system that has ensured the growth and attractiveness of the park, which is now a centre of innovation in the Life Science sector, with 40 organisations, including multinationals, large companies, research centres, small companies and start-ups, carrying out research and production activities.
Factors in the development of the campus are the regional bioPmed Innovation Cluster, a reference point for innovation and internationalisation processes for companies in Piedmont in the sector, of which the Bioindustry Park is the managing body, and the ITS Biotechnology and New Life Sciences Foundation, to which Bioindustry Park has been providing large spaces, state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms since 2020 to support higher education in contact with companies. In the context of the new partnership signed with Federated Innovation @MIND we have interviewed Fiorella Altruda, President of the Bioindustry Park.
Ms. Altruda, what are the objectives of Bioindustry Park Silvano Fumero?
The Park supports the creation and acceleration of innovative companies in the Life Science sector, linking the production world to research and training centres, attracting new investments and developing infrastructures suitable for the competitive growth of companies in an international environment and with a view to environmental and social sustainability.
Special emphasis is placed on the pooling of synergies created by the intensification of relations, also thanks to participation in national and international networks, which are key elements for the innovative development of the regional territory in the context of Life Sciences and Human Health.
Where did the collaboration with Federated Innovation come from?
From the need to create a system, thinking in broader terms of a supply chain between Federated Innovation @MIND and Bioindustry Park, references for companies in Lombardy and Piedmont operating in the public and private health sector; two strategic territories on the European Life Sciences development axis.
The collaboration is intended as an opportunity to integrate the wealth of knowledge, networks and resources belonging to the two poles and to promote joint projects of a broader scope, with the specific aim of developing an innovative and competitive health ecosystem and accelerating the creation of a true virtual Life Science district between MIND and the geographical areas of the Bioindustry Park.
What are the activities envisaged by the partnership?
The activity will take place through thematic working groups that will focus on digital and innovation trends in healthcare. To this end, it will explore the factors that improve care and the effectiveness of treatments, as well as the most innovative ways to facilitate dialogue between institutions, pharmaceutical companies, start-ups and research centres and to promote the creation of a public-private network aimed at innovation in precision medicine and patient access to new treatments.
The strengthening of research and internationalisation of the production sector will be addressed from an industrial perspective with a focus on the various components of logistics, production and R&D in the health and Life Sciences sector.
What are Bioindustry's expectations?
The innovation and growth of the sector, the complexity of the healthcare system in the context of our society, and the opportunities it offers require an unprecedented commitment. With this in mind, we believe that it is important to work towards a virtual Life Science district to strengthen industrial production, research and technology transfer, but also to develop integrated logistics, a fundamental dimension in which to invest in the near future to improve the attractiveness of the area, together with support for start-ups in the sector, which today represent an important factor in innovation.
